Search Michigan Corrections Releases

A Montmorency County defendant enters the Michigan Department of Corrections system only when a state-prison sentence or MDOC supervision applies. Leaving Alpena County Correctional Facility for MDOC is a transfer, not a community release. Once state custody begins, Michigan’s Offender Tracking Information System is the proper public lookup for prison status, parole, discharge, and sentence dates. To find someone released from a Michigan Department of Corrections institution, match the state identity first, then read the status and dates together. County jail records remain separate, and a county-only sentence may never produce an OTIS record.

Michigan Corrections Release Paths

The Michigan Department of Corrections manages state prisons, parole, and much of the public supervision trail. A person sentenced in Montmorency County may first appear in the Alpena jail record because the Montmorency County Sheriff sends county inmates there. The county record should then show a commitment or transfer. OTIS may populate after MDOC intake, so a short gap between transport and a searchable state record is not proof that the transfer failed.

State-prison departure also has more than one meaning. “Parole” is conditional release into the community while MDOC jurisdiction continues. “Discharged” means the person is no longer under MDOC jurisdiction for the sentence shown, though the official OTIS explanation recognizes different paths to that status. A transfer between prisons or an “in transit” state is not release. Read the location, status, sentence, and date fields as a set.

Important: Transfer from Alpena to MDOC ends county-jail custody but begins state custody. It is not community release.

Search Michigan Corrections Releases

Start with the Michigan OTIS offender search. An MDOC number is the strongest key and takes precedence over other criteria. If that number is unknown, use the last name and first name, then compare the available personal and case details. A name-only result is not enough, especially when common names produce more than one record.

  1. Enter the MDOC number when known, or search by last and first name.
  2. Use a status filter such as All, Prisoners, Parolees, Probationers, or Discharged when it helps narrow the match.
  3. Open the detail record and compare the MDOC number, age or birth information, identifying marks, photograph, sentence, court, and county.
  4. Read status and location before interpreting any date.
  5. Use Date Paroled as evidence that the person left prison on parole. Do not substitute the Earliest Release Date.
  6. Request the official MDOC record when a certified discharge document or older information is required.

The broader Montmorency County release search helps determine whether OTIS is even the right system. A county-only booking belongs with Alpena and the Montmorency courts, not MDOC.

Michigan Corrections Release Fields

The official OTIS field guide gives Michigan-specific meanings that should not be replaced with a generic projected-release label. The important distinction is between a legal threshold, an actual parole departure, and the outside endpoint of a sentence.

OTIS fieldHow to read it
Status and locationCurrent prison, supervision, discharge, or absconder context
MDOC numberThe stable state correctional identifier
Earliest Release DateA parole-eligibility or Board jurisdiction threshold, not a promised exit
Date ParoledThe date the offender actually left prison on parole
Maximum Discharge DateThe potential outside sentence boundary as calculated
DISCHRGNo longer under MDOC jurisdiction for the sentence displayed

Sentence entries should also match the Montmorency court or the same person’s known state case. Another county’s sentence can appear on the same record. That does not turn it into the release record for the Montmorency custody episode.

The OTIS search screen permits status filters for Active, All, Prisoners, Parolees, Probationers, Discharged, Parole Absconders, and Probation Absconders. A wildcard can follow three leading characters in a name search. Additional filters include first name, sex, race, age, and identifying marks. Filters narrow candidates, but the MDOC number and sentence details still carry more weight than a visual or name-only match.

Note: OTIS sentence-management fields are not a substitute for a certified release or discharge document from MDOC.

Michigan Corrections Release Dates

Michigan does not use a simple universal “85 percent” release formula. Modern disciplinary-time prisoners generally must reach the judicial minimum before the Parole Board has jurisdiction, subject to the governing offense and sentence law. Older or otherwise credit-eligible sentences can follow legacy credit rules. Consecutive terms, court corrections, jail credit, misconduct, new cases, and Parole Board action can all affect the practical result.

An Earliest Release Date that has passed is not proof that the database is wrong. The Board may have denied or deferred parole, another legal constraint may apply, or sentence data may have changed. The Michigan parole statute frames jurisdiction and eligibility. Date Paroled remains the field that records actual departure on parole.

County-jail good time follows a separate path, including MCL 51.282 where applicable. A Montmorency county sentence is physically served in Alpena under the current arrangement, so Alpena and the sentencing court must supply the calculation. The MDOC state-prison fields should not be used to estimate that county release. A pretrial detainee has no sentence-based date at all; bond, dismissal, acquittal, sentencing, or another order controls the next step.

Parole
Conditional community release from a prison sentence while MDOC supervision continues.
Discharge
The end of MDOC jurisdiction for the sentence shown, as defined by the state record.
Board jurisdiction
The point when the Parole Board may act, not a guaranteed release appointment.

Michigan Corrections Release Contact

OTIS provides the first public route for a state-prison or supervision question. The research lists an OTIS assistance number for help with the official search. For a formal corrections record, use MDOC’s verified records or FOIA channel and include the MDOC number, sentence, and court identifiers. Do not send sensitive identifiers to an address that has not been confirmed on an official state page.

For supervision, use the MDOC parole and probation office locator. A displayed location can refer to a field office for a parolee or probationer. For an absconder, it is the last supervision location and not proof of a current physical location.

Michigan Discharged Record Retention

OTIS says records generally remain public for three years after discharge, including death, and may then disappear. A set-aside can also remove a public record. An absent name may therefore reflect the public retention window, lawful suppression, spelling, or a person who never entered MDOC. It does not prove that no state custody occurred.

Older verification can require the court file or a permitted MDOC records request. Michigan’s court display can also apply a seven-year criminal-sentence filter at marked courts. That is a search-interface limit, not a statement that the underlying file was destroyed. Match the source to the legal event and ask the proper custodian for records that no longer appear online.

Can OTIS confirm every Montmorency release? No. It covers MDOC prisoners and supervision records within its scope, not every Alpena county-jail booking or misdemeanor sentence.

Michigan Parole Release Records

When OTIS shows parole, the person has left prison but remains under state authority. Verify the identity, Date Paroled, status, and field-office context. Probation differs because it is imposed by a court and may be supervised through MDOC while the person remains under circuit or county jurisdiction. The Montmorency docket should be used alongside OTIS for the controlling probation order and discharge.

Michigan VINE can add an event alert for participating records, but it is not the certified MDOC file. Search the exact person and agency, register through the live interface, and verify any release alert against OTIS or the custodian. The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry is narrower still. A registry entry reflects a statutory registration duty, not a general state-prison release date or proof that supervision ended.

An absconder status is not discharge. OTIS offers Parole Absconders and Probation Absconders filters. The last supervision location does not reveal where the person is now. MDOC guidance routes probation-absconder information to the sheriff in the sentencing county, while its Most Wanted page is not a complete list of every county warrant.

Michigan Corrections Search Limits

OTIS is not a statewide arrest-history system. It excludes many people whose custody never reached MDOC. Information can also be absent or suppressed under law and policy. A photograph is a correctional identity aid, not proof of guilt, and it may not be the same image created during the Alpena booking.

For a person who moved from Montmorency custody, connect three records when possible: the Alpena release or transfer entry, the Montmorency judgment or commitment, and the OTIS state record. Together they distinguish a county exit, entry to prison, later parole, and final MDOC discharge without treating those separate events as one release.
